Insurance Claims Surge Post-Cyclone Alfred
Following the aftermath of ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred, the Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) has reported a significant number of insurance claims exceeding 9,000. This comes as policyholders in southeast Queensland and New South Wales grapple with the cyclone’s destruction.
Insurance Catastrophe Declared
The ICA has officially declared an Insurance Catastrophe for regions heavily affected by the cyclone, particularly in southeast Queensland and northern New South Wales. This declaration is crucial for streamlining the claims process for those impacted since the event began on Friday, February 28.
Regions Bearing the Brunt
The cyclone’s effects have been most pronounced in areas such as the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Hervey Bay, and the Northern Rivers. The declaration encompasses all claims related to the event from the specified date, ensuring a comprehensive response to the disaster.
Breakdown of Claims
Out of the 9,226 claims lodged, the majority (8,566) pertain to home insurance. Motor and commercial policies account for 526 and 132 claims, respectively. The ICA noted that while it’s premature to assess the full financial impact, historical data suggests a surge in claims as affected individuals gradually return to their properties.
Statements from the ICA
Andrew Hall, CEO of the Insurance Council of Australia, stated, “This remains an ongoing event, and it will require time to fully understand the scope of the damage.” He further urged policyholders to reach out to their insurers promptly, even if their return to properties is delayed. “We anticipate a substantial increase in claims as property owners begin to assess the damage and contact their insurers,” Hall added.
