University of Wisconsin-Madison Students Triumph in Captive Insurance Essay Contest
The University of Wisconsin-Madison proudly celebrates the achievements of its students who have been recognized as the champions of the 2024-2025 Captive Insurance Companies Association (CICA) College Student Essay Contest, themed Captive Insurance Solutions for Today’s Risk Management Challenges.
Rachel Claire Gibson and Ella Pernsteiner clinched the top spot, earning first-place distinctions along with a US$2,500 award.
The announcement of the winners was made during the inaugural session of the CICA 2025 International Conference at the prestigious J.W. Marriott Starr Pass Resort & Spa. This contest is generously sponsored by Hylant Global Captive Solutions (Hylant GCS).
The second prize was awarded to Matthew Sharretts and Samuel Brockelman from Connecticut College, each of whom took home a US$1,500 prize.
Third place, accompanied by a US$1,000 prize, was secured by Isabella Martinez and Skilee Soto from St. Mary’s University.
Reflecting on the talents of the winners, CICA President Dan Towle remarked: “The progression of the students’ understanding of captives as they navigate through the essay contest is truly impressive. Their burgeoning enthusiasm for captive insurance is inspiring as they delve deeply into their contest case studies.”

In addition to receiving monetary prizes, the students will have the opportunity to present their essays during an educational session at the CICA Conference, with their works being published by CICA Essay Contest Media Partner, Captive Insurance Times.
