Addressing California’s Insurance Shortage

Kin, a pioneering digital home insurance provider, has unveiled a new home insurance offering in California. This initiative is part of Kin’s broader mission to deliver essential coverage in regions increasingly underserved due to catastrophic events.

California’s Insurance Dilemma

California has been grappling with a persistent shortage of insurance options, a situation worsened by the escalating threat of wildfires and other natural disasters. Even before the recent wave of wildfires, traditional insurers had been systematically retreating from the area for years.

According to Senate reports, the non-renewal rates in California have more than tripled during the past year, leaving tens of thousands of residents without coverage. This has compelled many homeowners to either forgo insurance altogether or rely on the California FAIR Plan, the state’s last-resort insurance provider.

In regions such as the Palisades, the demand for FAIR Plan coverage has quadrupled as residents brace for impending disasters, underscoring the urgent need for alternative insurance solutions.

Kin’s Innovative Approach

Sean Harper, CEO and Founder of Kin, emphasized the importance of adapting to the increasing volatility of weather patterns, stating, “Adapting to increased weather volatility is one of society’s greatest challenges at the moment, and insurance will play a key role. There is a growing narrative that places like California are uninsurable, which actually implies they are uninhabitable.”

Harper continued, “We don’t think that’s true. California is insurable, and is an amazing place to live, but it will require new technology, new analytics, and new business models, which is exactly why we created Kin.”
